Tennis: Davis Cup in Marbella

Marbella has been chosen as the venue for the quarter-finals of the 2009 Davis Cup between Spain and Germany. One of this year’s major sporting events screened around the world, the duel takes place at the Puerto Banus bullring from July 10th to 12th.

The Royal Spanish Federation of Tennis (RFET: http://www.rfet.es/) confirmed that Marbella was the best decision possible and was sure of the organizing capability of the town. The Mayoress of Marbella, Angeles Muñoz, said she was convinced that the event shall be a total success.

Albert Costa, captain of the Spanish Team, recognized the effort the town hall of Marbella has made to get the event for Marbella and also wanted to make a special recognition to Manolo Santana, ex Wimbledon champion, who has contributed enormously to this project.

By the end of May tickets shall be on sale. There shall be a 3 day pass and VIP tickets. The matches shall take place at the Puerto Banus bullring in Nueva Andalucía.

The five Spanish players are amongst the Top 30 of the ATP.

For the German Team one shall be able to see Rainer Schuettler, Nicolas Kief, Philipp Koulschreiber and Philipp Petrchner.

Marbella has had a long history linked to tennis. At present Manolo Santana runs the Manolo Santana Tennis Club close to Aloha. During the eighties Bjorn Borg had a tennis Academy at Puente Romano and years before Lew Hoad also had tennis club further down the coast.
