Recently some positive news about Spain seems to have been lost amongst the negative headlines we have been seeing lately. The Spanish Government published the figures for last summer's tourist arrivals to Spain and these were the best ever. That means record figures for the Spanish tourism industry. In a recession European tourists seem to give importance to the proximity of Spanish destinations as posed to those on other continents. Troubles in other areas across North Africa, the Middle East, Portugal and Greece also seem to have had their influence.
Within this scenario, Marbella had a very successful season with most hotels and rental properties putting up a "fully booked" sign. Now in mid October, with beautiful sunny days and temperatures reaching 29º C, we still see many North European visitors specially from Scandinavian countries and Russia.
Over the last year visitors to Malaga have seen the beautiful new airport terminal and visitors to Marbella would have seen the improvements to the Marbella seaside promenade. After spending 6.000.000 Euros on this beachside walk, one can now walk alongside nearly 6 Kms. of Marbella beaches. From Marbella town centre to Puerto Banus and now further along to San Pedro, this promenade is a major attraction to tourists and residents. But the immediate future has many more improvements for Marbella and surrounding areas:
- Malaga airport will open a second runway before the summer of 2012. The works which commenced in 2007 are coming to an end after investing nearly 370 million Euros. This will bring more flights and more tourists to Malaga and the Costa del Sol.
- A new bypass road for Malaga city will be terminated and this will provide a new entrance to Malaga airport from the North. This will shorten the time to the airport and the access will be easier.
- The long awaited San Pedro tunnel will be finished in the first half of 2012.
- Malaga city will inaugurate next year a modern underground rail system.
- Construction work on the new port in Marbella, Port Al-Thani will commence in the first half of 2012. An amount of 80.000.000 Euros is planned to be invested only on the port infrastructure and a further 400.000.000 Euros on the buildings and surrounding areas. - The Mayoress of Marbella has announced the opening of a prestigious international University in Marbella. The Regent's Business School from London will have a campus of 500.000 m2 and will be a great improvement for Marbella. Not only will it attract students from all over the world, but this will give the possibility to many of the students who graduate and depart every year from international schools in Marbella continuing their studies locally. Regent's Business School is part of Regent's College London which is associated with the Webster University Network. Webster University is a private U.S. University with more than 100 campus locations trough the United States and across the globe in such places like Geneva, Vienna, Shanghai, Thailand and the Netherlands.
